Blast outside EU office in Argentina: police
(BUENOS AIRES) - An explosive device blew up early Tuesday outside a building in the Argentine capital that houses the offices of the European Union, causing some damage but no injuries, police said.
"We can confirm that it was an explosive device but the prosecutor has not authorized any information to be released because an investigation is under way," said a spokesperson at the federal police's communications office.
Guards at the building in the upscale Recoleta neighborhood of Buenos Aires said the explosion occurred shortly after two men were seen leaving a backpack at the door, state news agency Telam said.
The blast shattered the glass entrance to the building and windows in an adjoining parking lot, television images showed. No one was hurt, officials said.
The incident comes amid tensions between Argentina and the European Union over President Cristina Kirchner's decision last month to take control of YPF, an oil company owned by Spain's Repsol.
Deputy Foreign Minister Eduardo Zuain contacted the current EU envoy, Alfonso Diez Torres, to relay the government's solidarity, the foreign ministry said in a statement.
Police and firefighters were at the scene collecting evidence and working on the probe.
