Asia flood victims win extra EUR 11m in EU aid

(BRUSSELS) - Victims of last year's devastating floods in Southeast Asia will receive an extra 11 million euros in EU aid to help recovery and rehabilitation, the European Commission said Monday.

The aid, which brings assistance to 24 million euros ($32 million) in all, will go to people in the Philippines, Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam, among 7.5 million hit by typhoons, storms and floods late last year, the EU executive said.

"While the waters may have now receded, the humanitarian needs have not," said the commissioner for humanitarian aid, Kristalina Georgieva.

"We are not leaving until much-needed disaster prevention projects have been carried out," she added. "This is essential so that we are not helping people back to their feet only for them to get knocked down again in more floods next year."
