(COPENHAGEN) - The Danish head of the European Union's police mission in Afghanistan said Thursday he was stepping down to take up a job with a private company.

Kaj Vittrup has led the Eupol mission since October 2008, when he took over from the German Juergen Scholz.

"Quite simply, I was offered a job by an exciting private international company," he told the online edition of Denmark's Politiken daily by telephone from Kabul.

"I leave with a certain sadness, but I think things are moving in the right direction," in Afghanistan, he said, though he added that a lot of work remained to be done training Afghan police.

Vittrup, 66, told the TV2 News channel his new job was in charge of security training for an international company, though he did not say which.

Eupol Afghanistan was set up in 2007 to help create an effective police force in the troubled country.
