Poland picks candidate for EU regional commissioner
(WARSAW) - Poland's government on Friday said it had picked Pawel Samecki, a senior official from the Polish central bank, to replace Danuta Hubner as the EU's Commissioner for Regional Policy.
"Now the formal procedure to install Mr. Samecki in the post begins," government spokesman Pawel Gras said Friday, quoted by the Polish PAP news agency.
Hubner is leaving the job after being elected as a member of the European Parliament earlier this month.
Gras said Poland's Prime Minister Donald Tusk had already presented Samecki's candidature to European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso, who must approve him for the post.
Prior to taking up his central bank job in 2004, Samecki, 51, held a senior position in Poland's EU integration bureau and served as a deputy finance minister.
