(SOFIA) - Seventeen Bulgarians were arrested Thursday in the central city of Plovdiv for allegedly printing fake euro bills worth 400,000 euros (557,000 dollars), the interior ministry said.

The 100, 200 and 500 euro bank notes found by the police were of extremely high quality and with different serial numbers, it added.

Interior Minister Mihail Mikov welcomed the results of the police operation that according to him prevented the further distribution of the fake bills across the European Union.

Bulgaria used to be a major source of fake euro and dollar bills but criminal activity has gone down over the past years, experts said.
