EU calls on Moldova to normalise ties with Romania
(BRUSSELS) - The European Union urged Moldova Thursday to resume normal ties with Romania, after Communist leaders in Chisinau accused Bucharest of fomenting riots that left dozens hurt and saw almost 200 arrested.
"While understanding the complexity of the Moldovan-Romanian relations, we call on the government of Moldova to resume normal relations with Romania," the EU's Czech presidency, France and Sweden said in a joint statement.
"We call on the Moldovan authorities to respect all constitutional freedoms and on all parties to refrain from any violence."
The statement came after Moldova ordered the Romanian ambassador to leave for "activities incompatible with his status" and its main ally Russia expressed alarm over pro-Romanian sentiment in the protests.
The bloc said it "remains ready to work with Moldova in accordance with European values and principles and is committed to further strengthen mutual relations between EU and Moldova."
The EU reminded Moldova that "it is essential to enjoy good relations with its neighbours."
The statement was issued after a meeting in Sarajevo, Bosnia between foreign ministers of the Czech Republic, France -- which previously held the EU presidency -- and Sweden, which takes over the bloc's reins on July 1.
