EU 'very concerned', calls for end to Moldova poll violence
(BRUSSELS) - EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana expressed concern Tuesday about election-related unrest in Moldova and urged all sides in the ex-Soviet state to refrain from violence.
"I am very concerned over the situation in Chisinau," Solana, the European Union's top diplomat, said in a statement.
"I call on all sides to refrain from violence and provocation. Violence against government buildings is unacceptable. Equally important is the respect for the inalienable right of assembly of peaceful demonstrators," he said.
Earlier Tuesday, protesters stormed the parliament and presidential buildings in Moldova's capital at a mass rally to denounce the victory of the communists in legislative elections.
