06 October 2008, 15:06 CET

(ROME) - European Union authorities will do everything necessary to maintain the stability of the financial system, Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi said in a statement on Monday.

EU leaders "will take every step necessary in order to maintain the stability of the financial system, whether through the injection of fresh funds through central banks, or through actions aimed at specific banks or through steps to strengthen the protection of deposits," he said.
