French police could join EU Georgia team: ministry
(PARIS) - As many as 70 French police officers could be sent to Georgia as part of a 200-strong team of European Union observers, a French defence ministry source confirmed Sunday.
Questioned about a media report that France would contribute the largest number of police officers to the EU team of observers, with at least 70 officers taking part, the source said the figure was "plausible."
EU foreign ministers have agreed to send a team of observers on October 1 to Georgia at a meeting in the south of France last week.
The German government said Thursday it would contribute "around one-fifth" of the 200-member EU team.
Under the terms of an EU-brokered agreement with Russia signed last Monday, Russian troops would have until October 10 to complete their pull-out from the uncontested part of Georgia -- all regions except Abkhazia and South Ossetia.
