Poland asks EU to mull postponing summit with Russia
(BRUSSELS) - Poland asked EU leaders Monday to consider postponing a scheduled summit with Russia in November due to the Georgia crisis, according to a Polish text seen by AFP.
"The EU should carefully weigh the advisability of holding the EU-Russia summit," said the text, seen at an emergency summit of European Union leaders in Brussels.
Developments in Georgia "proved that Russia does not intend to fulfill" a peace plan brokered by French President Nicolas Sarkozy, added the text.
It added: "The EU should move energetically to establish an international peace force under EU auspices, in which Poland would pledge its participation."
The 27-nation bloc is already preparing an observer mission to monitor the peace agreement, which EU leaders were expected to endorse Monday, paving the way for it to be deployed by October.
