EU summit to do more than just support peace plan: France
(PARIS) - French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner said Friday that next week's emergency EU summit would go "further" than simply reiterate support for the peace plan already accepted by Moscow and Tbilisi.
"The preparatory document, which already exists, is going further," said Kouchner, whose country holds the rotating presidency of the European Union. He did not elaborate on the comments.
The meeting of EU heads of state on Monday in Brussels has been called to hammer-out the 27-nation bloc's position on the Georgia crisis.
On Thursday, Kouchner said some EU states were considering sanctions on Russia, but the French presidency rowed back from that position on Friday saying sanctions would not be sought.
"We are still in a phase of dialogue with Moscow, not in a phase of sanctions," said a source in the office of French President Nicolas Sarkozy.
"The time for sanctions has not yet come," the source added.
