EU tells Bulgaria to step up anti-corruption drive
(SOFIA) - EU Commissioner Guenter Verheugen urged Bulgaria on Wednesday to step up its fight against crime and corruption, a problem that has already led Brussels to impose sanctions on Sofia.
"I call on the whole of society to oppose corruption and crime and support the government's efforts to make its administration more efficient," Verheugen said in remarks made in German following a meeting with Prime Minister Sergey Stanishev.
Verheugen noted that the same problems had been raised with Bulgaria back in 1999 when it had first started negotiations to join the EU. At the time, Verheugen was the EU's Enlargement Commissioner.
"The fact that these problems exist in Bulgaria does not mean that they do not exist in the other member states as well," Verheugen acknowledged.
But the commissioner said that he was "worried about Bulgaria's image" and wanted to hear "positive news."
Bulgaria and neighbouring Romania joined the EU in 2007 but have since been placed under the strictest monitoring regime ever imposed on any bloc member.
In a recent report, the European Commission strongly condemned Bulgaria's failure to tackle corruption and its bad management of EU funds and froze 800 million euros (1.2 billion dollars) in subsidies amid corruption and fraud concerns.

EU tells bulgaria...
They were corrupt, bankrupt and behind a semi-european appearence - architecture wise and christianity of course - they were rotten to the core. Nor did they represent a wealthy consumer market for the EU businesses.
So what was the reason for the rush to get them into the club?
Security of a human shield against russia incase russia re-gained it's former power and formed a threat against the EU club once again.
In it's haste to create this shield - to protect the western EU members or to give them a little more time while russia meddled with those former cronies, EU screwed up and did not even impose a 10-year maturing process before issuing the club cards.
Now they are facing incredible odds coming to grips with the corruption, 20 million un-hygiene toilets - holes in the ground - lazy but crafty labourers, poor education if any, lack of civilization and civility etc, etc.
And yet, they imposed a minimum of ten years maturing process on Turkey, a country that has been for the last 50 years at least, a capitalist, forward looking, hospitable, clean and much better educated, western minded and a staunch ally of the west.
Why?
Simple.
Turks are predominantly moslem and some of the closed minded EU member countries such as france, austria, holland could not comprehend having a secular moslem country in their christian club.
So they screwed up royally and now they are being screwed by the former russian satillites every which way possible.
Major cases of regrets all around but too late to admit mistakes and EU never admits to major blunders like this.
Instead, they try to sweep the problems under the rug by pouring more funds into the screw ups hoping that cheap veneer they are applying will hide the crap they have inherited or more likely created by them.
The truth is, it will take at least 50 years and two new generations before these countries such as bulgaria can resemble anything european mentally and culture wise.
And for the next 50 years the tax payers from countries such as Sweden and Germany and England will be supporting this futile EU effort.
Lesson learnt??
Possibly, but at what cost?
In the interim, a young and consumer products oriented Turkey with it's buying power greater then those ten countries put together, is made to wait with hypocritical excuses from the likes of sarkozy et al who are good at rhetorics to buy votes but can not find their dicks in the dark because they simply don't have anything other than horseshit in their craniums.
The real sad part of all this is that these morons - left overs from the crusaders - are in high offices elected there by more morons of their kind.
Their electorates.
What a tangled web we-they weave!!!!
