Czech Republic to press for Georgian sovereignty

27 August 2008, 19:22 CET

(PRAGUE) - The Czech Republic will seek a united EU stand on rebuilding Georgia and maintaining Tbilisi's sovereignty at the bloc's special summit next week, the foreign minister said Wednesday.

"The most important is help in the reconstruction of Georgia...We want the EU to unify around a clear plan for the recontruction of the whole territory of Georgia," Foreign Minister Karel Schwarzenberg told a news conference.

Monday's summit should also focus on preserving Georgia's sovereignty, whose two Moscow-backed separatist enclaves of South Ossetia and Abkhazia were Tuesday recognised by Russia as independent, he said.

The special summit in Brussels was called by French President Nicolas Sarkozy, whose country holds the European Union's rotating presidency, in the wake of the Russian-Georgian conflict.

The Czech Republic has pledged 150 million koruna (6.15 million euros, 9.12 million dollars) aid to repair damaged infrastructure in Georgia and offered to host an international donors' conference.

Prime Minister Mirek Topolanek will lead the Czech delegation at the summit on Monday.

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev's move to recognise South Ossetia and Abkhazia as independent entities was widely seen as cementing Russia's gains in the Caucasus following a five-day conflict with Georgian forces.
