(BRUSSELS) - Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf's resignation is "essentially a matter of internal politics," a European Commission spokesman said Monday.

"There is not a lot to say; the European Commission considers the resignation of Pakistan President Musharraf as essentially a matter of internal politics in Pakistan," the spokesman told reporters in Brussels.

Musharraf, in power since a 1999 coup, announced his resignation on Monday during a lengthy television address.

The move came after the coalition government said it was ready to press ahead with impeachment of the president as early as Tuesday.
