Britain hails new Serbian government, supports EU bid

08 July 2008, 16:41 CET

(LONDON) - Britain on Tuesday hailed the formation of a new pro-European Union government in Serbia, saying it looked forward to the Balkan state joining the EU.

Foreign Secretary David Miliband said Britain would support Serbia's efforts join the 27-member bloc.

The Serbian parliament voted Monday for a new cabinet led by Prime Minister Mirko Cvetkovic. The economist heads an unlikely coalition of pro-Europeans and the Socialists of late hardline president Slobodan Milosevic.

The new formation, following May 11 elections, ends five months of political deadlock triggered by Kosovo's declaration of independence from Serbia, which Britain recognises.

"The recent election results showed that the Serbian people want a European future," Miliband said in a statement.

"The formation of the new government is a positive step in this process.

"I look forward to the day the UK and Serbia work together as equal EU partners.

"The new government knows what is required to join the EU -- the UK will support it in this challenge."
