EU aid commissioner urges Myanmar to accelerate access
(BRUSSELS) - Europe's aid commissioner Louis Michel on Sunday praised "signs of improvement" in Myanmar cooperation, but urged Yangon authorities to accelerate access to victims of Cyclone Nargis.
"I urge the government to let more relief workers in and to let them go to the stricken zone to work alongside the local authorities in assisting the victims," Michel said in a statement.
"The (European) Commission is ready to give more but the funds won't be much use without professional delivery on the ground," he added.
The European Union's executive arm announced Friday it had sent four humanitarian experts to Yangon.
It also signed contracts with three non-governmental organisations for delivery of materials including shelters, water purification systems and first-aid.
Michel said Thursday that the commission could release up to 30 million euros (46 million dollars) or more if Myanmar authorities give greater access to relief teams.
But while he acknowledged a loosening of restrictions over the weekend -- thanks in part to strong international pressure -- Michel said the risks caused by delays remain great.
"Hundreds of thousands of human lives are in the balance and a massive international operation is still needed in the Irrawaddy Delta to save those lives," his statement added.
"Myanmar should embrace the experience of the international humanitarian community gained in crisis zones around the world. Their work is independent and impartial."
The official death toll from Myanmar's devastating Cyclone Nargis rose to 28,458, with 33,416 people still missing, state television announced Sunday.
Foreign embassy officials in Myanmar have warned that the death toll is likely closer to 100,000.
The United Nations has said that tens of thousands more could die unless vital aid reaches some two million people.
