EU calls for international monitoring of Zimbabwe vote

02 May 2008, 19:38 CET

(BRUXELLES) - The European Union on Friday called for international observers to monitor the second round of Zimbabwe's presidential election to ensure it is "fair" and "free".

"We call immediately as off the second round of the election for an electoral process that is fair, free and run in a correct way," said a European Commission spokesman.

"We call for an international electoral observation presence right from the start of the proceeding," the official added.

Nearly five weeks after polling day, Zimbabwe's electoral commission announced Friday that Morgan Tsvangirai, leader of the Movement for Democratic Change, had won 47.9 percent against 43.2 percent for President Robert Mugabe and that the pair will take part in a run-off.
