India to negotiate 1.5 bln euro fighter upgrade deal with France
(NEW DELHI) - India agreed Friday for a French consortium to be the sole bidder for a contract worth up to 1.5 billion euros to upgrade its Mirage fighters, a French official said.
"The Indian government has decided to start negotiations with the French companies," including Thales and Dassault Aviation, the official said after a day of talks between Indian officials and French President Nicolas Sarkozy.
The Indian Air Force has 51 Mirage-2000 war planes, which are made by Dassault with electronics from Thales, that need a major upgrade.
The French consortium has been facing stiff competition for an upgrade contract from Israel, which recently overtook France as the second defence equipment supplier to India after Russia.
