EU development commissioner in Kenya

19 January 2008, 14:18 CET

(NAIROBI) - EU Development Commissioner Louis Michel arrived here on Saturday for talks with re-elected President Mwai Kibaki and opposition leader Raila Odinga, officials said.

Michel was due to spend the day in the Kenyan capital.

At noon he was having talks with Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka and Foreign Minister Moses Wetangula, the spokeswoman for the European Commission's delegation in Nairobi, Wairimu Njuguna, told AFP.

In the afternoon, he was scheduled to have separate meetings with Kibaki and Odinga, she told AFP.

She said Michel would give a press conference at 1600 GMT.

On Thursday members of the European Parliament called for a freeze in EU aid to Kenya until the current political crisis is resolved.

More than 700 people have been killed in Kenya in unrest following presidential elections on December 27 which Odinga says were rigged.
