Slovenia urges caution on EU treaty ratification

(BRDO PRI KRANJU) - Slovenia urged its European Union partners Tuesday to carefully weigh how to ratify the EU's new reform treaty, as Portugal considers holding a potentially perilous referendum.

The treaty, signed in Lisbon last month, will streamline the way the 27-nation European bloc is run and replaces the failed constitution, which was torpedoed by referendums in France and the Netherlands in 2005.

"Europe is very much interconnected and we have to ask ourselves how events in one country influence events in another country where the situation may be somewhat different," Slovenian Prime Minister Janez Jansa told reporters.

"All those of us now making decisions about how we intend to undertake this very delicate stage of the project ... have to bear the broader perspective in mind, not only the domestic issues but also pan-European issues," he said.

Of the EU's member countries, only Ireland is constitutionally bound to hold a referendum. Most nations are expected to ratify the treaty through their parliaments although some, including Portugal, are yet to commit.

However Jansa, whose country took over from Portugal as the EU president nation last week, expressed optimism that the treaty would be adopted there even if it were put to the vote.

"Even if there were to be a referendum in Portugal, it would be a positive one," he saidat a press conference with European Commission Vice President Margot Wallstroem.

EU leaders have committed to ratify the treaty before the next European Parliament elections in 2009 to ensure that the bloc's institutional woes do not undermine the vote.

Slovenian hypocrites

EU gang is a cruel public decapitation. Slovenia now a part of the EU gang, is not the only country, EU's land grab crime is lower then we as a free people can prosses. Namely territory over which Croatia has more than 15,000 Croats murdered 4000 are still missing 220,000 displaced. Croatia should stick to its goal to protect Adriatic Sea and fishing stocks which Croatia says are being depleted by Italy's larger fishing fleet fishing on the Croatian side of the sea. On its side of the Adriatic Sea Croatia has every right under international law of the sea to implement it. Also not to be bullied when the hypocrites in EU, Italy and Slovenia have their own proclaimed protected fishing and ecological zones on their sides of the Adriatic sea. If the Croatian fishing fleet would ignore it and tried to fish their the boats would be sized and crews charged in court. I am soo dissapointed in EU and how they behaved towards Croatia on this matter.… EU enlargement commissioner Olli Rehn said in a statement that refusing to open up the fisheries and ecological zone to all member states would lead to "negative" consequences. So the EU states can rape and pillage wipe out your resources at will and make a quick profit without any consequences to them selfs. To hell with both Italy, Slovenia and EU.

PS. EU propaganda problems so-called undivided Adriatic Sea and open bordering issue. The sea is not and cannot be the subject of succession sea belongs to the land and depends on the land which is Croatia you pile of Slovenian shit! What is sad about all this Slovenia disallows Austria access to sea. Slovenian hypocrites!
