Can Online Casinos be Trusted?

10 December 2016, 01:21 CET

One of the biggest reasons some people have steered clear of casinos, isn't because they're opposed to gambling or not drawn to it, but rather because they believe that the house has an enormous advantage and that the odds are heavily stacked against them. They also don't trust the fact that there are stringent rules in place and that they are followed to the letter.

Credit card

While this may have been true many years ago, things have changed significantly in this sector. Regulatory bodies wield an incredible amount of power and govern the industry with an iron fist. Mandatory checks are performed regularly in order to keep the industry squeaky clean, and should a casino be found not to be towing the line, they can be slapped with a hefty fine, or even face expulsion. Security is taken seriously and extensive measures are employed from the side of reputable online casinos to ensure that all their casino games are above reproach. Maintaining a record that is not only spotless, but above reproach is seen as the so called holy grail, but the important thing is to differentiate between a top end casino and a fly-by-night.

The first thing you need to be on the lookout for is a valid license by an accredited, recognised gaming authority. These accreditations aren't handed out lightly, and those who apply for accreditation need to comply with a barrage of requirements. The initial application process isn't where it ends. Audits are performed on a regular basis and have to be passed in order for the license to be retained.

Random Number Generators

In the casino industry fairness and impartiality are crucial. Random Number Generators (RNG's) ensure that a game of skill or chance is exactly that, and that no party has the odds stacked for or against them.

Payment Vendors

These days we are spoilt for choice when it comes to payment vendors. Years ago we were only able to choose between one or two well-known vendors, but nowadays we have a variety of options. Once again, due diligence needs to be exercised when selecting a particular payment vendor. Most top casinos will offer a few to choose between, but while the casino would have vetted these vendors before endorsing them, the onus still lies on you to make a choice with which you feel confident.

Online security

Arguably one of the most important points is encryption. A SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) creates an encrypted link between the web server and web browser thus creating a secure connection and protecting your information. There are other methods such as Hypertext Transfer Protocol Secure (HTTPS) as well as Transport Layer Security (TLS), which are used in order to give you the required amount of security when transacting online.

If the casino you're considering dealing with can't guarantee that they won't give or sell your information to a third party without your consent, alarm bells should sound. Your privacy should be as important to them as it is to you.

At the end of the day it's your money you're playing with and it is your responsibility to make sure that the online casino you're dealing with ticks all the right boxes. There are plenty of reputable online casinos out there, and you shouldn't allow yourself to be put off by a few rotten apples.
