The concept of agent has become increasingly important in both
Artificial Intelligence (AI) and mainstream computer science. Often
described schematically as an abstract functional system similar to a
computer program, intelligent agents are sometimes called abstract
intelligent agents to distinguish them from their real world
implementations such as computer systems, biological systems, or
organizations.
Over the past decades, artificial intelligence gave relatively
little consideration to the issues surrounding agent synthesis. Since
then, there has been an intense flowering of interest in the subject:
agents are now widely discussed by researchers in mainstream computer
science, as well among those working in data communications and
concurrent systems research, robotics and user interface design.
