The Blue Planet Forum, organised by the Committee of the Regions and European Commission's Directorate General for Fisheries and Maritime Affairs, will be an opportunity for a wide range of stakeholders to discuss proposals contained in the Commission's forthcoming 'Blue Paper', due to be published in October.
The paper is the result of a year-long consultation on the 2006 Green Paper, Towards a future Maritime Policy for the Union: A European vision for the oceans and seas . The Commission is expected to propose actions around four key areas: maximising the economic use of the oceans and seas in a sustainable way, attributing a maritime role for Europe in the world, making the most of knowledge and innovation, and ensuring a high quality of life in coastal regions.
The event, taking place at the CoR headquarters in Brussels, is organised in partnership with the European Commission's Directorate General for fisheries and maritime affairs, Portuguese Presidency of the EU, the French National Sea Centre (NAUSICAĆ), the World Ocean Network, the Conference of Peripheral Maritime Regions, the International Polar Foundation and the regional government of Schleswig-Holstein (Germany), which will award a prize for scientific contribution to sustainable sea use and socio-political commitment for the preservation of oceans.
The Blue Planet Forum will also provide a platform for, among others, the Azores regional government ( Portugal ), the province of Reggio Emilia (Italy), the World Festival of Underwater Pictures, the European Network of Science Centres and Museums and the European Union of Aquarium Curators.
