What are News Feeds?
News Feeds let you see when websites have added new content. You are able to get the latest headlines in one place, as soon as its published, without having to visit the websites you have taken the feed from.
What is RSS?
News Feeds are known as RSS. This stands for Really Simple Syndication. It is an 'XML' web page which can be read by a computer with special feed reading software or a web service that you can use from your web browser (such as Internet Explorer or Firefox). Put the address of one of our web feeds into your reader, and it will display the latest headlines, each one with a synopsis and a link that will take you to the full story.
How do I use RSS feeds?
The first thing you need is a news reader. This piece of software checks RSS feeds and lets you read any new articles that have been added to them. There are a number of different versions, some of which are accessed using your browser, and some of which are downloadable applications. Browser-based news readers let you catch up with your RSS feed subscriptions from any computer wherever you are, while downloadable applications let you store them on your main desktop computer, in the same way that you either download your e-mail using Outlook, or keep it on a web-based service like Hotmail.
To view our web feed you need software called a feed reader or aggregator. Feed readers you could try include:
Windows
Mac OS X
Web
Bloglines
FeedZilla
Microsoft Live
My Yahoo!
Browser
Once you have installed a feed reader you can add the News Feed by clicking on the orange RSS link in the browser address bar or on of the blue RSS icons on this page or on the topic channel homepage.
Setting up a feed differs from one aggregator to another, but it usually involves copying the URL of the feed (from the address bar on your browser) and pasting it into the reader.
