It's that time of year again, the time of New Year's resolutions. Europeans should be aware of the benefits of investing in energy efficiency - for our environment, for our energy independence, and for our economy - public as well as private. As we enter into 2013, EuroACE - the European Alliance of Companies for Energy Efficiency in Buildings, is calling on EU Member States to firmly resolve to tap the enormous energy efficiency potential of buildings by securing a swift, complete and properly enforced implementation of the recast Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD).

The new EU regulation aims to accelerate the granting of patents within the EU. The international coalition of No Patents on Seeds! and other institutions are warning that adopting the EU Unitary Patent would not be in line with the interests of civil society.

Today, the Member States will take a decision on the new European Patent Court. Presumably it will be based in Paris. Next week also the European Parliament will take a vote on the new EU patent regime. The EU Unitary Patent aims to harmonise the way patents are granted and enforced. No patents on seeds! is demanding that an exemption is introduced into the Unitary Patent system allowing the usage of seeds and animals for further breeding and propagation for agriculture.
