Publisher's Note
================
In June, the European Commission announced a voluntary
lobbyists' registry to tighten up on lobbying activities in
Brussels. On Monday, the EU's anti-fraud office opened an
enquiry into media allegations that a senior EC official
gave market-sensitive information to reporters posing as
business lobbyists.

At its launch, the registry was criticised as weak. So far,
only 316 groups have registered across Europe - from around
15,000 EU lobbyists. The latest allegations will put the
Commission under added pressure to live up to its promise
of improved transparency and make the registry compulsory.
