Germany took the helm of the European Union and the
Group of Eight club of rich nations on Monday with the
self-appointed task of striving to relaunch the Middle East
peace drive and the EU constitution.

Monday their New Year's accession to the EU even as

EU energy experts said Thursday that the EU's natural gas
supplies were assured for this winter, following a deal
between Belarus and Russia.

5. Eurozone inflation stable at 1.9 pct in December

Eurozone inflation was stable at 1.9 per cent in December
compared to November, in line with the ECB's
preferred level of close to but less than 2.0 per cent,
Eurostat said on Thursday.
