The Commission this week proposed to double the financial
support EU Member States may give to companies outside formal
state aid. Revised "de minimis" rules would allow subsidies
of up to EUR 200,000 over three years for any given company.
UEAPME, the European SMEs' employers organisation, welcomed
the text which "will cover a vast majority of the existing
schemes for SMEs, allowing them to benefit from substantial
government loan guarantees without facing burdensome
notification requirements".
Member states have till October 20 for further comments on
the Regulation, before it enters into force in January 2007.

Commenting on our piece "Prodi urges EU to lift arms embargo
on China", Charles_M writes:
"I suppose Prodi & Chirac have forgotten about Tibet,
political prisoners, media censorship, Taiwan, China's stance
on Sudan, China's general policy of increasing trade with
Africa at ANY cost, etc. etc. Let them develop their own
arms, 10 or 20 years from now who do you think will be the
biggest superpower? It certainly won't be the EU or what's
left of it."
