Educational attainment still depends on your socio-economic background, says a report out this week which looks at the key challenges for Europe's education systems. A couple of facts: only 44% of young people aged 18-24 who had finished school at lower secondary level were employed; and the share of 15-year-olds under-achieving in basic science increased from 16% in 2012 to 20.6% in 2015.

Equal opportunity for all is a guiding principle of the EU, and, as Education Commissioner Tibor Navracsics says, education systems "have a special role to play in building a fairer society by offering equal chances to everybody."
