Publisher's Note
================
The human cost of the squeeze on jobs across Europe was
brought into focus this week by mass protests against public
spending cuts. "No to austerity" was the message of
thousands of workers who marched in Brussels on Wednesday.

The global financial crisis has pushed millions of jobs off
the European map. Workers are worried that many more will go
as a result of government belt-tightening. Less so in
Germany, however, which has avoided the massive unemployment
seen in other EU countries. This is thanks to a
"Kurzarbeit" scheme, where the government subsidised shorter
working hours to help companies get through the global
downturn. Maybe an example for others to follow.
