Publisher's Note
With dairy product prices falling due to low demand brought
on by the economic crisis, European farmers have protested
for months that they need more help. On Thursday, the
Commission decided to extend for six months a scheme under
which producers who cannot sell their butter are given
subventions to put it into private storage.
Whether this will quell the protests is uncertain, however.
The Commission's aid has been very targeted, and it refuses
to go back on a decision to scrap milk quotas - which the
farmers say is threatening their livelihood.

into the pharmaceutical sector Wednesday over concerns that
cheap generic medicines are not reaching patients in need.

EU regulators have waded into the energy sector, fining
Germany's EON and France's GDF Suez over a billion euros
for agreeing to stay out of each other's markets.

The Commission has unveiled plans to classify millions of
complaints lodged by consumers across the 27 EU Member
States each year to help identify where markets are
failing shoppers.

Member States have decided to impose anti-dumping duties on
US biodiesel imports, which are suspected to be heavily
subsidised.

Bavaria said on Thursday it will publish next month how
much its farmers receive in EU handouts, after the
Commission said it would take Germany to court.

6. Economic crisis cuts number of illegal immigrants
The number of illegal migrants stopped at EU borders has
dropped 16 per cent in one year because of the economic
crisis, says the European border security agency.
