INEL launches portable XRD stress-measurement system Xsolo

INEL of France, a specialist in X-ray diffraction (XRD) equipment, will release Xsolo, a portable residual-stress-measurement system, later in 2012. The company designs and manufactures a range of XRD equipment, used in both public- and private-sector R&D centres, as well as in industry. INEL, which is already present in the USA, is seeking distributors across Europe.

Headquartered in France, INEL specialises in the design and manufacturing of XRD equipment, such as systems for powder diffraction and four-circle goniometers, used in industry, but also in public- and private-sector R&D facilities. Later on this year, INEL will release Xsolo, a new product that is a portable residual-stress-measurement system.

Residual-stress measurements are usually performed inside a laboratory and on small samples (with a maximum size of 15cm x 15cm x 12cm). Undertaking the same kind of analysis on whole parts, or very large samples, is possible but requires the use of complex devices. Furthermore, even with other robot-mounted XRD-measurement systems produced by INEL, the sample must always be brought to the device.

Thanks to Xsolo, INEL’s new portable system, the analyser is brought to the sample in order to measure its residual stress and texture. This portable system is the best product on the market to perform residual-stress measurements in the field, due to its small size (25cm tall), light weight (<10kg), and easy-to-use design.

The Xsolo’s anode source is Cr 4 Watts. The product has a 2D detector of 24mm x 34mm, an angular range of 90° to 170° 2? and a pixel size of 20µm. The Xsolo also has a charged-coupled device (CCD) with cooling that uses the Peltier effect. It motorises the Phi axis, has a Psi/Omega angle detection and a working distance of approximately 22mm.

Xsolo is used for various applications, including welding control in the field (on pipelines or in nuclear-reactor facilities, for instance) and onsite critical industrial-parts control (for the aerospace or automotive industries). Xsolo can also be employed in the determination of critical failures in important structures that have been damaged, or in declaring a repaired area as being restored to original specifications.

Additionally, INEL has developed its skills in X-ray and extreme UV impulse sources, with applications in metrology and lithography, among others.

INEL has succeeded in gaining the trust of major laboratories and leading industrial groups worldwide, such as the Forensic Science Service (FSS), in London (UK); Vertex Pharmaceuticals, in the USA; Institut français du pétrole (IFP, the French Institute of Petroleum), in France; and the Government of India.
