US- Style Summer Schools Introduced in UK to Tackle Literacy Skills

The £200,000 project is being introduced in London to help disadvantaged pupils in the area during the summer holidays but if the pilot proves successful the programme will be expanded across the UK next summer.

Modelled on American summer schools, it is funded by the Education Endowment Foundation and its aim is to tackle the achievement gap between rich and poor students with a mix of literacy and numeracy lessons as well as educational, recreational and community activities.

The summer school, which will be run by Future Foundations, will be mainly be open to pupils on free school meals as research has shown that only four out of 10 pupils on free school meals will reach the required learning standards in primary school. This is less than the eight out of 10 pupils who are not on free meals.

These kinds of summer school programmes have been proven to work in the States and all those that take part will be monitored to see the level of their progress over a four-week period.
