UK Renewable Energy Usage Is Increasing

02 July 2012, 09:59 CET

The UK is striving forward with renewable energy solutions and is cutting back on fossil fuel usage, according to a recent report.

The Department of Energy and Climate Change has published its quarterly energy prices for 2012 and it has revealed that there has been an increase in the use of renewables across the country.

Findings show that offshore wind generation has doubled from 2.4 TWh in the first quarter of 2011 to 3.6 TWh; as well as hydro generation which is up on 43% due to high winter rainfall.

Bioenergy has risen over 30% as a result of the conversion of Tilbury B to dedicated biomass and of electricity generated gas only accounted for 27% which is its lowest share in 14 years.

Further results reveal that indigenous production of fuels in the UK fell by 12% in the first quarter of this year compared with 2011; and production of oil decreased by 13%. What is more, nuclear generation accounted for 17% of total electricity generated- a reduction from 19% in first quarter of last year.

Coal accounted for 42% but overall renewable energy usage has risen by 0.2% in contrast to 2010, as measured against the 2009 EU Renewable Energy Directive.

Charles Hendry, Energy Minister, said: “Today’s statistics show a clear increase on the first quarter of last year across all renewables – with rises in wind, hydro, solar and bioenergy generation.

“Alongside a 36% increase in renewables capacity in the last 12 months, this shows that the UK is powering forward on clean and secure energy and is clearly a very attractive place to invest.”

The Energy Trends and Quarterly Energy Prices publications are published by the Department of Energy and Climate Change. The Energy Trends covers statistics on energy production and consumption, in total and by fuel, and provides an analysis of the year on year changes; whereas the Quarterly Energy Prices covers prices to domestic and industrial consumers, prices of oil products and comparisons of international fuel prices.

As evident of the figures, renewable energy is surging and it can be at your fingertips with help from the experts at Enerfina. They are independent renewable energy advisors and they specialise is helping homeowners and businesses reduce your carbon footprint and save money.
