Third of Brits Spend More Time on Facebook than Talking In Real Life

30 April 2012, 14:32 CET

More people ‘tweet’ their friends on Twitter and message them over Facebook rather than talk to them in real life, according to a recent survey.

Findings by social networking site Badoo reveal that one in five Britons prefer to communicate online as opposed to face-to-face or on the phone. And a third admitted to spending more time chatting with online acquaintances than with ‘offline’ friends.

The study of 2,000 adults found that many people spend more time keeping up to date with their virtual lives than keeping their real life relationships and a third of those surveyed confessed that on the web they lie to appear cool and interesting.

Further results showed that 27% of Brits get lonely and 16% prefer to engage in text or online contact rather than speaking via the telephone or interacting face-to-face. What is more, one in five parents have missed out on their child’s magical moments such as first steps, because they have been toying with getting the camera ready; and one in three people have more friends online than in real life.

Worryingly, a third professed that they are more likely to speak to strangers over a social network than in person; and 25% said they feel more confidence online.

Whilst online platforms such as Facebook and Twitter are fantastic to meet new people, keep in contact with long-distance friends and share news, it is important that you do not forget how vital it is to interact in real life over the phone or face-to-face.

The tip is to ensure you keep a healthy balance of offline and online and this is especially imperative for businesses to forge a good relationship with customers. More and more companies are interacting and engaging with their consumers on forums and through social networks but a friendly voice and a smiling face can always put people at ease.
