Sleepless Nights could be contributing to Weight Gain

18 July 2012, 10:19 CET

Poor diet routines and unhealthy snacking at work are causing us to become sleep deprived, according to a new study.

The survey, conducted by global nutrition company Herbalife found that the people struggling to sleep are more likely to be those consuming unhealthy snacks such as crisps, chocolate and fizzy drinks.

Out of the 5000 office workers surveyed between the ages of 18-75, the findings suggest that 44% of people in Europe are eating outside of meal times, whereas 55% of workers in the UK were said to snack the most.

If you have been experiencing a bad night’s sleep due to increasing pressure at work, you are more likely to reach for unhealthy snacks full of sugar, which you might think will give you more energy. However, the energy supplied in these unhealthy foods will contribute to weight gain and will make it even harder for you to sleep at night.

The findings also suggested that sleep deprivation seems to affect more women as they appear to be under more pressure to juggle a hectic lifestyle with work and childcare.

Here are some top tips to improve your sleep pattern:

Stop the snacking

Getting to bed earlier will ensure that you are bursting with energy the next day, which will encourage you to eat healthier snacks to prevent any weight gain.

Avoid Caffeine and Sugary Foods

Avoiding caffeine and sugary foods before bed will help you to be more relaxed. As caffeine is a stimulant which keeps your body energised, your mind and body will struggle to rest.

Eating a nutritious Breakfast

Starting the day with a healthy and nutritious breakfast including protein and carbohydrates, including bread and cereals, will give you energy that is natural. Healthy foods are free from additives and excessive amounts of sugar which will ensure you have a calming night’s sleep.

Start a Routine

If you know you might be tempted to snack at work, plan your three meals a day to ensure that you will stick to a strict routine. This will help you to stop snacking on unhealthy foods and will ensure you have the best night’s sleep.
