Parents Lack Confidence in Raising Newborns

16 May 2012, 17:27 CET

A number of surveys have been published recently which show that the confidence in parenting and raising newborn babies in the UK has diminished.

New research from The Essential Parent Company, which involved over 500 parents, highlights the lack of support, low confidence and anxiety experienced by parents and over half of those surveyed are more assertive changing a light bulb than a nappy.

Findings reveal that 80% of new parents believe they do not have the practical skills to care for their bundle of joy and as a generation, Britons are becoming nervous, stressed and lonely parents.

Dr Rebecca Chicot, Child Development and Parenting PhD from Cambridge University and founder of The Essential Parent Company, says that society has lost its instinctive ability to be parents because now people live further from their families and women are working more and have less contact with the baby.

The top areas which new mums and dads felt least prepared in were dealing with sleep issues, managing a crying baby, first aid and emergency intervention, and feeding.

This follows another study polled by YouGov on behalf of the NSPCC which found that two in five mothers struggle to cope with the demands of parenting during the first two weeks after birth. And 72% confessed that they needed more help and wanted professional advice before their baby was born on subjects such as fear and depression.

Now the charity is calling on the government to ensure more resources are available to provide the services babies and families need. Chris Cuthbert, the charity's head of strategy and development for children under one, says that Mothers need better support in dealing with the 'emotional turmoil' of looking after a young child.
