Homeowners Urged To Check Boilers to Cut Money Waste
Households across the UK are wasting a whopping £1.3 billion by leaving gadgets and electronics switched on, according to a recent survey.
Findings by the Energy Saving Trust reveal that many households are losing valuable money by not turning off computers, televisions and other devices.
The study, which involved 250 homes being monitored, found that each household wastes up to £86 a year on electricity bills by leaving appliances on standby and not fully switching off the gadgets.
Families are leaving televisions on for six hours a day and homes are forking out between 9-16% of the average electricity bills on non-active electronics. The average spend is £35 for powering computer use and £68 is expended on DVD players, hi-fis and radios.
Further results show that UK households use a tumble dryer for four-fifths of laundry cycles instead of opting washing lines or indoor drying racks. Running such machinery costs on average £80 a year and this doesn’t take into account the costs of fabric softeners or detergents.
And more energy is being used with households using double the amount of electricity on dishwashers than washing machines to keep the kitchen clean. Another study recently published dubbed ‘The Powering the Nation’ found that energy used to heat and power homes accounts for over 25% of the UK’s carbon emissions.
Philip Sellwood, chief executive of the Energy Saving Trust (EST), said that more is to do be done to advice consumers on the take-up of energy efficiency. He added: “It’s crucial that households across the nation can make informed decisions by having the right advice to help them reduce their energy usage and fuel bills.”
The survey findings show how important it is that Britons get their boilers checked to cut their carbon footprint and save money.
