HMRC Appeal to Taxpayers That Still Haven’t Filed Their 2010/2011 Tax Return

The taxman is appealing to taxpayers whose self-assessment return is still outstanding as they have already received a £100 late-filing penalty even if there is no tax to pay. But Britons can face further charges from 1^st May each day it remains outstanding, up to a maximum of 90 days.

Daily penalties for paper returns started on 1^st February as the deadline was on 31^st October but online returns were required by 31^st January. Taxpayers endanger themselves of receiving further penalties of at least £300 if the returns are issued 6-12 months late.

Stephen Banyard, a spokesperson from HMRC, said: “We want the returns and not penalties. So, if you haven’t sent us your 2010/11 return, you need to do one of two things urgently – either send it online by 30 April, or call us if you think you shouldn’t have to complete one.”
