Energy Efficiency Revamp available for Spanish Hotels

17 October 2012, 16:03 CET

Hotels in Spain are now being given the opportunity to revamp their energy efficiency thanks to an online tool.

The United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) has developed the tool to aid hotels in calculating the needs, costs and returns of altering their energy usage. The Hotel Energy Solution E-toolkit provides an evaluation on the best and most viable energy-saving processes for hotels based on previous information from other users. France and Germany have already embraced the tool, with Spanish hotels following suit.

Suggestions for efficiency measures and renewable energy projects will be given, along with a cost calculator which will be able to show hotel managers how financially viable it is to invest in the suggestions given.

During ‘World Tourism Day’ this September in Madrid, UNWTO Secretary-General Taleb Rifai stated "Thousands of hoteliers have already accessed the English version of this free tool, saving money and mitigating their environmental impact.”

The overall aim of the tool is to increase Hotels energy efficiency by 20% and the use of renewable energy by 10%

This is spurred partly due to the fact that hotels and tourism accommodation account for over a third of the 5% global CO2 emitted via the tourism industry.
