Cooking In the Kitchen Increases Life Longevity

31 May 2012, 09:17 CET

The kitchen is the heart of the home but it is also important for life longevity. An inactive kitchen could shorten your lifespan, according to a recent survey.

Findings published in a Cambridge journal reveal that home cooking increases longevity and people who cook up to five times a week are 47% more likely to still be alive after 10 years.

The study, which involved almost 2,000 men and women over the age of 65 living in Taiwan, shows that cooking is a healthy behaviour despite the fact that 43% of those surveyed never cook.

The researchers found that 17% cook one to two times a week, 9% cook three to five times a week, and 31% cook five or more times a week. But they could all benefit as frequent cooking is associated with survival and life endurance.

Lead author Professor Mark Wahlqvist said in a statement: “The pathways to health that food provides are not limited to its nutrients or components, but extend to each step in the food chain, from its production, to purchase, preparation and eating, especially with others.”
