Contractors in Scotland Outperformed the UK Market

23 April 2012, 15:51 CET

The contractor market in Scotland is beating the contractor market in the UK, according to recent findings.

The Bank of Scotland Report on Jobs revealed that temporary and permanent contracts increased last month at its fastest pace since August 2011.

Both permanent and temporary contracts rose at its strongest rate in the city of Edinburgh; whilst the strongest rise in temp hourly pay rates was in Dundee. And the availability of temporary and permanent staff improved to the greatest extent in Aberdeen.

According to the March report, Scottish recruitment agencies reported a strong increase in temp staff billings in contrast to a decline recorded across the UK as a whole. What is more, the demand for temporary and contract staff increased steadily with growth at a four-month high.

With regards to employment sectors, the Nursing/Medical/Care category experienced the biggest demand of temp vacancies. This was followed by IT/Computing, Accounts and Financial, and Secretarial and clerical. The only two sectors to suffer a low number of temp job roles were Blue Collar, and Hotel and Catering.

Donald MacRae, Chief Economist at Bank of Scotland, said: “The Scottish labour market showed a further improvement in March with the Barometer at its highest level since last July.  The number of people placed into permanent jobs increased solidly in the month while temporary job placements rose at the strongest pace in seven months.

“This provides further evidence of an economy beginning to reverse the slowdown experienced at the end of last year and raises hopes of a return to moderate growth in 2012.”

The report, compiled by Markit, is based on a monthly survey of over 100 recruitment and employment consultants, and provides up-to-date information on Scottish labour market trends and is seasonally adjusted.
