Britons Risk A Potential £10K Repair Bill for Not Checking House Exterior
Many homeowners are putting themselves at risk of forking out thousands of pounds on repairs by not checking the outside of the house properly, according to a recent survey.
Findings by Aviva reveal that some Britons are not clued up when it comes to maintenance checking the exterior of a property and the insurance company is urging all households to examine any outside faults or face the danger of a potential £10,000 repair bill.
Research found that only 15% of people check their chimney stack on a monthly basis and 21% admitted to never checking this area of the house. It is reported that defective stacks can lead to damp problems and this can result in a hefty tab around the sum of £1000.
Further results showed that one in ten homeowners never check their roof for missing roof tiles or signs of leaks and similarly if this outdoor problem is left untreated, people can find themselves spending a massive £5,000 to fix.
Another potential setback is Japanese Knotweed in the garden and 46% of those surveyed confessed they never check for signs of it. Almost half of Britons believe it is not a serious problem despite the fact that it can cost up to £5,000 to remove and it can damage walls, drains and paving.
Heather Smith, director of home insurance at Aviva, said: “Our research shows that our homes really are our castles and we are taking a great deal of care to make sure there are no unexpected problems lurking in the nooks and crannies of bathrooms, bedrooms and lofts. That protective spirit is great to see, but many of the common and expensive problems that affect homes often begin outside the home.”
It is important that all homeowners check the exterior of the property on a regular basis to make sure nothing too serious is occurring; and when you do examine the roof to ensure that the guttering hasn’t become blocked and that the fascias and soffits are in working order.
