Britons Miss Home Cooking and English Cuppas When Holidaying Abroad

17 May 2012, 15:19 CET

Drinking a cup of tea, watching your favourite television show and reading a British newspaper are the top things Briton’s most miss when they holiday abroad, according to a recent survey.

Findings by the ‘Believe in Gloucester’ campaign, which commissioned the study, revealed that British holidaymakers start to miss home four days and 14 hours into a vacation and the top aspects which they pine for when abroad include an English cuppa, drinking tap water without worrying, and sleeping in their own bed.

Researchers found that home cooking plays a key feature when Britons go overseas and 45% confessed to taking their own tea bags with them when going abroad.

The study, which involved over 2,000 people being surveyed, showed that a dedicated one in ten people miss their job whilst on holiday and many yearn for their family pooch or feline.

Alison Tennant of the ‘Believe in Gloucester’ campaign, said: “We’re a nation that appreciates our home comforts and revolve our lives around our family and having things the way we’re used to.

“It’s great to experience new cultures and surroundings and broaden our horizons, but it’s only natural to miss home and want to stay connected – there’s nothing wrong with being happy with where you live.”

The top 10 things Britons miss when away consist of a cup of tea; drinking tap water without worrying; own bed; pet; own toilet; watching the programmes used to; own shower, eating salads without worrying; newspaper; and family.

And further results show that a fifth of people complain about swimming pools overseas, mosquitoes, the food and other tourists.

But people can still enjoy these things and avoid getting homesick by holidaying in the UK. Independent Cottages is the leading website to search for affordable, high quality self-catering holiday cottages across the UK.

Britons can cook their favourite foods, take their pet with them and watch their much-loved TV programmes whether it is a relaxing short break away or a fun-packed family holiday.
