Britain and Denmark to Swap Renewable Wind Energy
Options are being studied to build a huge power cable between Britain and Denmark to swap wind energy, according to a recent report.
The countries will import and export renewable energy and increase market competition, the grid operators have claimed.
Britain’s National Grid and Denmark’s Energinet.dk will reveal by the end of the year potential landing points to build a super grid in the North Sea to connect offshore wind power.
Torben Glar Nielsen, executive vice president of Energinet.dk’s electricity division, said: “Both Great Britain and Denmark are planning for integration of future very high amounts of wind power. Therefore, the study will also look at how the new cable would help both countries export and import renewable power.”
Both countries have targets to reach to increase renewable energy production; Britain has set the aim at 15% of all energy consumption by 2020 and Denmark plans to salvage 50% of its electricity consumption by the same year.
What is more, they both hold 10% of the European Union’s installed onshore and offshore wind power capacity.
However, it is also reported that Britain has plans to connect to Belgium and Norway and to increase power capacity with Ireland and France. Denmark is liaising with other countries too as it is currently building a link to Norway and is in talks with an interconnector to the Netherlands.
