A Third of UK Businesses Hire Freelancers on a Weekly Basis

07 August 2012, 16:29 CET

Almost half of UK businesses plan to hire contractors in the coming year and a third use freelancers on a weekly basis, according to a new report.

Findings carried out by Kingston University on behalf of PCG show that more and more firms are hiring independent professionals to complete specialist project work and 41% plan to utilise freelancers over the next year.

The study reflects recent research by the Government which found that the number of self-employed in the country has increased by 12%. Self-employed people now account for 6% of the UK’s workforce.

Both results suggest that freelancing is surging in popularity and that it has become a core principle in the UK’s industries.

John Brazier, Managing Director at PCG, said: “The findings from the Kingston Report prove that freelancing is now one of the cornerstones of the UK economy. This data is especially important now as it shows that in tough economic conditions, the ability to be flexible is critical – both for businesses and individuals looking for work.”

The report was aimed to help provide contractors and freelancers and their representative bodies with a powerful tool for engaging with policy makers at a national and European level.

It found that freelance workers are present in all industries but most commonly in education, arts entertainment and recreation, information and communication, and professional, scientific and technical activities. More than half of the entire UK contractors work in these four industries.

With the sector booming in popularity, there is no better time than now to go solo if you are considering becoming self-employed. Nixon Williams are one of the leading UK contractor accountancy firms and they specialise in expert accountancy services for freelancers across the country.
