Sophia Antipolis (France), 30 January 2008 – Temex, a specialist in the design and manufacture of frequency solutions for the defence and aerospace industries, has launched a new digital pulse compression sub-system (DPCSS) with chirp generator (transmitter) and compressor (receiver) modules for IF. This DPCSS with analogue I/Os enables upgrades of SAW-based radars, increasing overall system performances.

The DPCSS with analogue I/OS is the result of Temex’s 30 years of experience in the design and manufacture of high-performance signal processors. Combining the latest-generation FPGAs for signal processing with the analogue input and output for the IF of SAW, this signal processor is an excellent replacement for radars that are currently SAW-based.

The DPCSS with analogue I/Os perfectly meets the requirements of the retrofit radar market by enhancing overall system performance. High-speed digital signal processing eliminates all the inherent limitations of SAW’s analogue nature, as well as improving the performance of the side-lobe levels (which is close to theoretical levels) and virtually eliminating the differential phase between receiver channels. Temex’s digital solutions also allow users to reduce power consumption in comparison to temperature-controlled devices.

The stand-alone DPCSS only needs a DC supply voltage for operation. All the pulse compression parameters – such as centre frequency, bandwidth, time dispersion, modulation law and weighting function – are programmable.

The P/N CI BM7xx, the first product in the line, offers instantaneous dynamic range (low side-lobe level); accurate angular measurements (angle of arrival); flexibility (programmable parameters); and I/O frequencies up to 120MHz (centre frequency and half bandwidth). CI BM7xx prototypes are now available for system validation.

Temex can also produce customised designs and models. The company’s digital signal processing solutions for SAW sub-system upgrades of pulse compression radars range from digital expanders and compressors to digital pulse compression sub-systems. As per the client’s needs, Temex can either retrofit the expander or compressor, or the entire pulse compression sub-system.
