European Parliament calls for 2030 Binding Renewable Energy Target

The European Parliament adopted today in plenary the Reul Report which calls on the European Commission to propose a binding European renewable energy target by 2030.

"This vote confirms the European Parliament's commitment to basing Europe's future on renewable energy and sends a very strong message to both the European Commission, currently consulting on a 2030 framework for energy and climate policies, and to Member States", said Hinrichs-Rahlwes.

The Parliament's vote took place the day before Heads of States meet to discuss energy policy.

"The European Parliament has shown its commitment to a policy which will help create new jobs, decrease resource use and greenhouse gas emissions while maintaining Europe's technology leadership worldwide and boosting Europe’s competitiveness", concluded Mr. Hinrichs-Rahlwes.

Created on 13 April 2000, EREC, the European Renewable Energy Council, is the umbrella organisation of the major European renewable energy industry, trade and research associations active in the field of photovoltaics, small hydropower, solar thermal, bioenergy, geothermal, solar thermal electricity and wind energy.
