Support for EU membership rockets in Lithuania after referendum
VILNIUS, June 23 (AFP) - Support for European Union membership in Lithuania has rocketed, according to the first opinion poll since the country overwhelmingly voted to join the bloc in a May 10-11 referendum.

According to the poll by the Vilmorus polling company, four out of five Lithuanians, or 79.4 percent, back EU membership, a 13.1 percentage point increase over May.
Only 11.9 percent were opposed and 8.8 percent undecided, in the poll of 1,062 people conducted between June 5-8. In May, before the referendum, the figures were 13.3 percent and 20.4 percent respectively.
In the May 10-11 referendum, 89.9 percent of voters said Yes to EU membership on a turnout of 63.3 percent. Lithuania is on course to join the EU on May 2004.
