Latvia unlikely to join euro before 2011: finance minister

22 October 2007, 11:46 CET

(VIENNA) - Latvia will not be ready to adopt the euro before 2011 or 2012 given the country's high level of inflation, Finance Minister Oskars Spurdzins said in an interview published here Monday.

"The only (euro membership) criterium we don't fulfill is inflation. But bringing down inflation can't be achieved that quickly. We won't make it before 2011/2012," Spurdzins told the daily Der Standard.

Latvia had originally planned to adopt the single European currency next year, but was forced to postpone those plans in view of accelerating inflation.

In September, the cost of living in Latvia increased by 11.4 percent on a 12-month basis, the fastest rate of inflation in more than 10 years.

In an attempt to rein in price pressures, the government recently launched a package of measures to dampen private consumption, including tighter loan policies.

Such measures would take time to bear fruit, Spurdzins said.

"The world markets, rising energy and consumer goods prices are among the factors which mean we'll need some time yet to bring inflation down to an acceptable rate," the minister said.

Latvia's economy has been growing rapidly since joining the European Union in 2004.

In 2006, it grew by 11.9 percent, the fastest rate since independence from the Soviet Union in 1991 and one of the strongest growth rates in the EU.

Spurdzins nevertheless rejected suggestions that the Latvian economy was in danger of overheating.

"Private consumption is high, but still within the European average," he said. "And the economy is not any more out of balance than in other new EU states," he insisted.

euro membership criterium

"The only (euro membership) criterium we don't fulfill is inflation."
This is a plain lie! situation with Human Rights in Latvia is appalling! just one of examples: there were 3 cases of pedophilia in Latvia during one week (!) when Latvian police was contacted, the comment was that this is a "normal" case in Latvia, usually there is at least one such case per week! The age of kids was 2 and 3 years, they were sent home and molesters up till now are not arrested (!!!) these kids were crying their hearts out and saying they don't want to go back home...
Therefore, nobody in their right mind would claim that Political criteria (of which HR is the crucial part) is fulfilled in Latvia in order to be part of EU. I wish international press would look into it more, a lot of unimaginable things would be discovered. Absolutely clueless how could EU accept this, no idea what lies were presented to EU about the state of HR in Latvia.

Human Rights

You might be right, but I think you're confusing EU membership (political) with euro membership (currency/financial). The statement "The only (euro membership) criterium we don't fulfill is inflation" is correct, because the original article is discussing Latvia's adoption of the euro as its currency - not the country's membership of the EU.

Latvia is not alone in having human rights problems of course - there are "a lot of unimaginable things" (many ignored or unreported by the international press) happening in most countries - including in remote parts of longterm EU member countries such as France, Germany and the UK. It would be hypocritical for the EU to fail Latvia on HR when many of its current members would probably fail similar tests. It's very difficult for governments to prevent all human rights violations, all crime, all injustices ...
